What are the most beautiful pieces of writing qua writing that you know?
I love parts of Churchill. But I also feel as though he allows himself the cliche a little too often. It becomes a mix of the sublime and the cliche.

This seems to be a common problem with political speeches, e.g. JFK. Not so true of Lincoln, AFAIK.

Yes, I don’t like JFK’s speeches Formulaic with a hint of the frat boy Churchill was a great self-fantasiser – probably necessary in a great orator But we can hear clichés because their quality at the time MADE them clichés The quote I sent isn’t cliched
