What's a good explanation for how grad schools get away with paying stipends that are ~1/2 what fresh graduates get in the private sector?

An experimental physics grad once told me, "the postdocs wash the floor, the grads are the tools with which the postdocs wash the floor."
Theoretical physics. Sometimes theory students have the employee experience, but in my case (and my cohort) decidedly not.

Yeah, theoretical physics is basically the same as math.

I had the same experience as Michael but in computational psych/neuro which is at least closer to lab sciences (but nothing like bio). I’m currently in the private sector on a break and can’t wait to get back
