I disagree with this. American culture is way too much about criticizing, snarking, and hating on things (and yes, I'm doing that in this tweet). Do we really need an ever-expanding professional class of people telling us not to like things? https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1082372174042738688 …

_Good_ cultural criticism is worthwhile. Eg, I hated reading Neil Postman ("Technopoly", "Amusing Ourselves to Death") at the time, but later realized how important it was, and that it changed my thinking in important ways. OTOH, most cultural criticism is low quality.

Why did you "hate" reading Neil Postman and then realize how important it was? I haven't read his stuff, so I can't guess. If you "hated" it and then it changed your thinking, was it because he was criticizing something you liked at the time?

There are a bunch of minor issues with his work, which I was more or less using as an excuse to not engage since there were some uncomfortable issues for me with his broader thesis. But I perservered, and came to appreciate the broader POV.

I don't agree with his POV, but think he raised many profoundly important questions and said some insightful things about them; those have changed me. Pretty much how I think of Marshall McLuhan, too, or Ivan Illich.

Hmm, none of this sounds like "hated" reading his work... that strong language made it all sound more interesting.

Nope, hated is actually pretty accurate. Or, at least, really annoyed and irritated. The ideas percolated round my head for years, gradually making their way in. So now I can see I was simply overreacting to minor flaws as an excuse for not engaging sharply with my discomfort.

And I really was overreacting. It's telling that I can't remember any of the details of the flaws now, though at the time I thought them disqualifying.
