invoices i've sent in 2018 still unpaid in 2019 current total: $8,754.56. average payment delay: 28 days. a big part of the art economy is based on interest-free loans from artists.

(I've had so much trouble with reimbursement at academic institutions I now typically ask if they can pay upfront, before I agree to speak. They often grumble, but rarely decline, and it's made my life much easier. No more interest-free loans to billion-dollar megacorps...)

academic and corporate payment is often more flexible than arts organizations and festivals. many arts orgs & festivals are so small they have to optimize their accounting process in a way that is not open to this sort of variability.

I'm often told "it's impossible because of our process". I then say "I'm sorry, I can't make it then". And then they suddenly discover it becomes possible; I don't think this has ever failed to work (admittedly, I'm probably dealing with different orgs)

the orgs might be different, but there's also a huge difference in having the ability to potentially turn down an opportunity. working at ycr is relatively more stable than working as an independent artist (especially without an academic position). i can't always push that hard.

I was largely unpaid for 7 years (lived frugally, off savings, and ex-wife's small income). Still did this often. I was worried about doing it at first, but orgs would nearly always say "yes" when I pushed. And with careful wording it was possible in principle to backtrack.

It actually really ticks me off - I think it's a way orgs systematically take advantage of people. UC alone owes me many thousand of dollars. (I kept making the same mistake with them, over and over, sigh.)
