invoices i've sent in 2018 still unpaid in 2019 current total: $8,754.56. average payment delay: 28 days. a big part of the art economy is based on interest-free loans from artists.
I'm often told "it's impossible because of our process". I then say "I'm sorry, I can't make it then". And then they suddenly discover it becomes possible; I don't think this has ever failed to work (admittedly, I'm probably dealing with different orgs)

the orgs might be different, but there's also a huge difference in having the ability to potentially turn down an opportunity. working at ycr is relatively more stable than working as an independent artist (especially without an academic position). i can't always push that hard.

I was largely unpaid for 7 years (lived frugally, off savings, and ex-wife's small income). Still did this often. I was worried about doing it at first, but orgs would nearly always say "yes" when I pushed. And with careful wording it was possible in principle to backtrack.

I'm also not (usually) asking for speaking fees, but just for reimbursement (I'm being paid anyway).

Some orgs or people do sometimes try to make me feel bad, like I'm being a prima donna or somehow unreasonable. I try to remind myself that their budget has several more zeroes on it than mine, and they are just being ridiculous.
