Oh have done this more times than I remember--probably should have tracked all the things I've ended up following. Most common is twitter accounts or blogs. Most people are not generating original thought (though of course other values to generate besides that) so you when new
idea starts to show up repeatedly, very useful to trace back where it came from and who. But for more concrete smaller examples - I now track when foreign films do disproportionately well in foreign countries--that's sign to watch them (either by money or awards)
