I've been wading through material about numerical relativity, & it's not entirely obvious (a) what the question properly means; and (b) if it's been solved, if it can be given a precise meaning.

What counts as "efficient"? After being stuck for a long time, people finally got good enough at simulating in-spiralling black hole accurately for enough orbits to be useful for LIGO. For a while it seemed this experiment might fail for lack of good algorithms!
