Expectations are an attempt to control the world, and they will eventually disappoint or destroy. They're in the basket of things that need to be held lightly, along with identities and ideologies.

It's really an empirical observation. My life has gotten better when I got more invested in different parts of my identity! More sadness & heartbreak, too, but on balance: better!

You may be right. I'm pretty sure I've been too far to the left for much of my life, in many ways, so I've been thinking in directionally appropriate terms for me.
