Borges: "[I]ntelligence has little to do with poetry. Poetry springs from something deeper; it’s beyond intelligence. It may not even be linked with wisdom. It’s a thing of its own; it has a nature of its own. Undefinable."pic.twitter.com/cylWJkrREc

Creativity doesn't even have much to do with consciousness (Julian Jaynes' Origin of Consciousness addresses that well). It's on the editing /packaging part where (standard) intelligence and consciousness enter the picture.
Indeed "standard" intelligence & wisdom do not seem to be prerequisites for great art. An example from mainstream - Kanye West's MBDTF is musically genius - is this due to "IQ" or wisdom?
Ha! Was reading Dodgson few days ago & wondered: he was gifted mathematician *&* also sliced up the language (& still made sense). Always felt that's related - mathematicians tend to have great syntax & lot of flexibility with it (notice: foreign language, low vocab, high syntax)
artificial, one might say
Hey may be referring to something like perception combined with aesthetic sense. There's the idea that thought obscures our perceptions since attention is conserved, so maybe he's explicitly contrasting with intelligence to point out that what's required happens without thought.
There are many kinds of knowledge, and knowledge-creating processes, in our minds. I’d guess the specific mechanisms for learning to ride a bike, read a facial expression, or write a novel are all different, along with how they’re stored and later recalled.
"Poetry is meant to be a little silly" - as the best Poet said. Borges just showing off.
I came to the same idea about a year ago in a moment of enlightment which changed my view of the human nature. Poetry is a connection between minds at much lower level because it bypasses information laws which are otherwise implicitly forced upon us by using grammar as a form.
In other words logic and intelligence are constraints of our brain "modems". But what we ultimately want to communicate are patterns of our neural nets which don't need information logic at all. Poetry can do it in a raw form.
