A greater sense of the numinous than almost anything else I've read. I've never finished either - I can't read very far before starting all kinds of projects, it's just too stimulating. I wouldn't call it sci-fi, particularly, though I guess it's shelved there; more genreless.

I pick one or the other up every few years, and think "this time I will finish!" An hour later I'm feverishly inspired... and no longer reading. It's very strange.

As noted elsewhere, I have a lot of trouble reading far into the books, so I'm hesitant. I've gotten further into "Last and First Men" (maybe halfway, though I have skimmed to the end). Not sure which one that's an endorsement for.
