For me, it's not just 1 and 2. Also 3: talk with my friends & colleagues; 4: talk with new people; 5: go to events; 6: go on vacation; 7: read etc.
The most productive I've ever been was during a week-long vacation on Maui 
. Oddly, it was a great vacation qua vacation, too. And: hello from Las Vegas!

I wish I did better at following my own model... When your option 2 isn't working I tend to think "More 2 is required!" Within limits that's right, but over time is just crazy. But I still default to it!
