For me, it's not just 1 and 2. Also 3: talk with my friends & colleagues; 4: talk with new people; 5: go to events; 6: go on vacation; 7: read etc.

I wish I did better at following my own model... When your option 2 isn't working I tend to think "More 2 is required!" Within limits that's right, but over time is just crazy. But I still default to it!

Exactly. No approach guarantees progress, because *every* approach is bound to run into unforeseen problems. However, one can learn or invent new criteria for assessing one’s approach. And, when dissatisfied, one can select or invent new approaches, & test those in their turn.

Following Popper, reject the search for certain, final truth in favor of error-correction. So, in comparing policies for solving unforeseeable future problems, the question is not “Which is right?” but “Which best identifies and corrects mistakes (which are inevitable)?”
