Is it just me or do Hollywood bad guys throw around comically low numbers? Like, the putative price for the research program behind Jurassic Park wouldn’t even fund the CGI dinos to say nothing about the real ones.

Stanford is around 90% and smaller universities are in the 35-60% range today.
Many granting organizations impose caps for this reason. 10% is not uncommon, though it varies. At most universities this this is only a small fraction of total, but again it varies a lot. Here is the Gates Foundation policy, for instance.pic.twitter.com/FaHr8oukJG

How this works is that for groups like this with limits, they are granted waivers. We did this when we built our student satellite. Here's the rub, we raised $6.7m in cash and in kind. Our university development demanded our donor list and went after them later for donations.

I created and ran, as a student, a research group under our Research Institute at my university. At one time I was bringing in more money than the entire engineering department. Trust me, that does not endear you to your professors.
