Is it just me or do Hollywood bad guys throw around comically low numbers? Like, the putative price for the research program behind Jurassic Park wouldn’t even fund the CGI dinos to say nothing about the real ones.

One of the many factors that explains the explosion of research costs is that grants now are expected to massively subsidize all the administrators (whose numbers have exploded) - 30-40% overhead is considered normal.

Stanford is around 90% and smaller universities are in the 35-60% range today.
