Somehow I omitted the link to the full piece, which is very well reading in its entirety:https://autotranslucence.wordpress.com/2018/03/30/becoming-a-magician/ …

One thing I've learned to do - too slowly, to my regret! - is to study those people. What do they do? _Why_ are they doing it? What's the gestalt? What are the big, obvious things that I would never think even to question, but which they do differently?

Everything from the tiniest mechanics to the largest gestalt, from the mundane to the remarkable is worth thinking about, and learning from. I know that sounds like a cliche, but I think it's true. There's so much to learn from in others that I think we often screen it out.

Have you ever read “The Mundanity of Excellence”, by Daniel Chambliss? One of my all-time favorites https://fermatslibrary.com/s/the-mundanity-of-excellence-an-ethnographic-report-on-stratification-and-olympic-swimmers …

Read it a long time ago. Time for a re-read.

@SanatanDinda is the artist I discussed in the essay. And if anyone wants to go down a rabbit hole of looking at artwork from the World Bodypainting Championships, you can check out https://bodypainting-festival.com/en/ - 1 more reply

Great stuff, observing 'magicians'. A shift to a different angle of approach also requires being prepared to let go of your secure stepping stones.Deliberately letting the ground slip away from under yout feet. But equally important: simultaneously being in control of the processpic.twitter.com/tkgTAaa4rY

Or, getting good at something is a byproduct of the more profound transformation of oneself through interaction with one's medium. The magic may be stunning, yet it pales in comparison to the beauty within the magician.
