Love this thought provoking assay. Q: isn't 'design science' a refined version of engineering... ? Weren't the sages at Bell Labs, working on the transistors doing design physics? Weren't the physicists at the Manhattan project doing design physics while working on the A-boom?

Only very minimally, in the sense I describe in the essay. Transistors are only slightly different a notion to pre-existing amplifiers/switches. Criticality and chain reactions were more or less new design idea, but pre-dated the Manhattan project.

Interesting, very. Out of curiosity what does Vygotsky bring to the table for you?
-
Thanks. Vygotsky: many things, but in particular a clear realization that the external objects and representations we're exposed to change the way we think. An aeronautical engineer who has studied stealth will think v. differently to one who has not. Etc.

Science turns reality into models. Engineering turns models into reality. Design is the bit that links them together.

i appreciate you putting your thoughts out there. my son has been trying to get me to do this too. i get an idea of what you're getting at with design science, but i'd like to see what the quantum computing design science elements are. does it hinge on information? if so how?
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

my only point of contention is with "The notion of designing radically new classes of object and behaviour hasn’t made it into popular culture in any really deep way" re: combinatorial game design. /1

While it's true that nearly all games are extensions (evolutions) of existing games, radically original, deep, emergent models do occassionally occur.
