Hacker News imposes a delay before you can post replies. Initially the delay is tiny, but it gets longer the deeper the thread. Apparently the mods had noticed that deep threads tended to be flamewars, and thought a delay might help cool things down.

That's a great first step but means it's artificially bottlenecking conversation when two people actually _want_ to talk to each other in literal depth. I've run into that restriction in the past and been frustrated. Maybe the next step is smart delays based on sentiment? ^_^

Agreed. You could use depth as input to a sentiment detector.

Incidentally, I looked at some recent deep comments, & it's not clear the feature is still implemented. But (a) I saw one of the mods (dang?) mention it in a comment a few yrs back; & (b) I've had to wait before posting. So while I'm not sure they still do it, it's been tried
