Ah… how was it (mis)used? I’ve been too busy with family-crisis fire-fighting to pay attention to cultural dynamics in the past year…
Don't like what someone says? Accuse them of virtue signalling! It got old really quickly. Saw the term used a lot this way even when the person really was invested (e.g., had put their money where their mouth was, had made other sacrifices).

Good take. It should be used sparingly in the micro, but quite often in the macro given it’s explanatory power. Not surprisingly, both right and left miss the mark here.
