Imagine the reaction on Twitter if Darwin published the Origin of Species today. It was bad enough for him at the time, but imagine what it would be like now. If he had an employer, there's a significant chance he'd be fired.

This gives me a lot of pause. I've found Twitter a great way to meet people irl, but you're right: the medium itself is bland & encourages blandness. And being conditioned to have bland thoughts seems really bad. Hmm.
Let me amend that slightly. Large parts of academic / creative Twitter really are great. People playing with ideas that are genuinely interesting. But as soon as you get into areas where offense is common, people become much more guarded and, as a result, bland.
