Part of the solution here will most likely involve going back to having job security for younger researchers. Right now the pressure to contribute towards directions which attract funding are huge if you want to stay in the field long-term.

In support of Shor's and Feynman's diagnosis: Prof. Steven Barrett, who's behind the idea to build planes without moving parts, decided to invest five years in the project, despite several negative earlier diagnoses, and now has flying prototypes.https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/nov/21/first-ever-plane-with-no-moving-parts-takes-flight …

I've written about the psychology of how people aren't used to doing this even when funding isn't a concern:https://malcolmocean.com/2015/11/just-do-a-thing-nobodys-expecting/ …

I enjoyed your piece in the Atlantic
@michael_nielsen In the UK, at least, I feel like the 'publish or perish' mentality stops researchers targeting the harder ground breaking problems.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I thought and worked about 2 years on how to add two sub-wave functions in quantum computing, which is essentiallly to use linear combination of units ties for quantum computing: the duality quantum computing, Gui-Lu, Long. Communications in Theoretical Physics 45.5 (2006): 825.

I am grateful to Stan for setting up the mathematical theory of duality quantum computer: Gudder, Stan. "Mathematical theory of duality quantum computers." Quantum Information Processing 6.1 (2007): 37-48.

HHL algorithm is a duality quantum algorithm that uses LCU: Wei, S. J., Zhou, Z. R., Ruan, D., & Long, G. L. ,Realization of the algorithm for system of linear equations in duality quantum computing. In Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring), 2017 IEEE 85th (pp. 1-4). IEEE.

"the total number of physicists has increased by a factor of roughly 100 between the years 1900 and 2000." -> Funding remained flat since 70ies. In contrast: NIH funding increased ~6 fold since then. Result: Most papers there to me appear like irreproducible clutter and junk.pic.twitter.com/R3TEF34bPq
