V interesting. Marriage clearly serves a purpose externally at least as much as it does for the couple. I wonder if the decline in marriage rates can be partly explained by the decreasing relevance of making a public commitment, in an increasingly fragmented society.

Or more to the point, maybe people who don’t want to get married just don’t have to as much anymore.
