My critique is that the progress of the past because science was being done to fight wars. Its a bad idea to do science for that reason, and even worse to lament current science for not being like it.
I don't accept the premise, but do wonder if there's some truth to it; I'd be curious what systemic links can be made. We're not lamenting current science for not being war-based.
