I feel science needs a lot more of ‘hackers’ who do their own cross-disciplinary thing outside of academia. I’m hopeful for disruption in the way science is done because computational approaches are being applied to many fields now.
I've (anecdotally) noticed a real uptick in the number of para-academic researchers, much like this. I presume because the net makes papers available + a community of practice. It's a really interesting phenomenon, and hopeful.

Yes. It’s amazing how much influence projects such as
@karpathy’s http://www.arxiv-sanity.com/ and@jeremyphoward’s FastAi can have. Well executed online resources are big levers and massively underrated. -
I decided 25 years ago to opt out of the exclusivity and gatekeeping of traditional academia. It's nice that nowadays it's a little easier to still get research noticed. But academia's immune response to bucking the system is still strong.
