Most quantitative proxies of inputs (people, money) and outputs (articles mostly but also trained people and tools) of rsrch have been growing exponentially for a long time (probably since at least 18C but for predictable reasons any given proxy can't give a full timeline) +

...Ok, that's just de Solla Price with a few bells and whistles. We argue from social models of knowledge production that that growth is a key aspect of the western knowledge system itself, it doesn't function without it.
