But we could change each (or every!) one of these in radical ways.

Alright. I mostly agree with the ideas for change (as examples) but disagree with the premise. Problem in my view isn't lack of a growth model, the growth is intrinsic. The problem is a lack of institutions to handle coordination -> silos -> lack of translation of new concepts
-
Where I think we might agree is the need for meta-institutions that help to adapt/evolve the existing institutions. Those are missing, and we scaled up too far/fast in mid to late C20 for the existing institutions to adapt in time leading to stasis and brittleness

Given how amazing the discoveries in the early half of the 20th century were I would say the data you and
@patrickc collected in your survey is pretty encouraging. The decades appear to be more or less consistent with being flat given that each decade has only 10 prizes. -
The money/effort spent looks bad plotted by itself but as a percentage of gdp is pretty flat since ww2. Science may or may not be getting harder but there is still a lot of obviously important and poorly understood phenomena and the return is still quite positive.

Some great insight. One thing that seems obvious to me is that the majority doing science are all white and male. New ideas need new perspectives; i.e. people from more diverse backgrounds. More investment is needed to attract people into science from all demographics.

Increased interdisciplinary work is also key (which is what we are seeing more and more of). Creativity too.
