Which books are startlingly better upon a much later reread? Many extremely thoughtful recommendations in the replies:https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1162965264306077696 …

Examples of books (or stories) that you reread years later, & found to be much better? For me: Arrival (Ted Chiang, loved it even the first time); Speaker for the Dead (ditto: loved it at first, even more upon reread); the Great Gatsby (didn't like first time, loved the second)

Following the example of @michael_nielsen I want to try to organize certain of my tweets. This is the start of a super-thread of threads about small sets of real numbers, and I'm adding the tag #gowersmathstweets, which I'll try to do with all such tweets from now on.

If all you knew was the roman numerals, how could you invent a better way of representing numbers?https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1174420006907473920 …

Imagine you're a designer or mathematician living in ancient Rome. Being a curious & imaginative sort, used to exploring wild ideas, you ask yourself: is there some way you can improve on the roman numeral system? Might it be possible to find a better way of representing number?
