I think that was me! And I wasn't necessarily talking about academia...
It was probably because of the coincidence with this paper: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1805.09966.pdf …. It's unclear, how much such biases matter quantitatively. And as the effect of findings and models (ideas) become more measurable, any such structural problems will be improved.
OK. "Society's supposed innovation systems often fail to create the most valuable innovations" read to me like that, but then I misunderstood. My point is, that the "creativity of the fringe" can result simply from sampling bias.
