A wonderful tidbit: Dave Keeling, of measuring-CO2-the-Keeling-curve fame, has a son, Ralph. Ralph Keeling is famous for measuring _declining_ atmospheric O2 levels (since it's converted to CO2). And this has been critical for understanding the carbon cycle.

Also, it sounds as though R. Keeling's work on O2 measurement was actually based on quite a bit of understanding of LIGO! It used laser interferometry. (Perhaps not so surprising: it's a hell of a delicate measurement, since O2 is ~500x as common in the atmosphere as CO2!)
