I love Groucho’s Law. But I disagree that this is a sign of academic innovation fail. The deep work here is RSA, Byzantine Generals, &c—all done within.
Proof of Work was not original to BitCoin—the main innovation there was implementation, timing, and publicity. IMO, academia should not optimize for these!
Good question. Half-serious side note: They say you can tell when a company is not innovative, because it has an innovation department. Perhaps one can draw some parallels with society.
