The other piece of the puzzle is that, especially on the humanities, tenure track jobs are infinitely more desirable than the options in the private sector, and the demand for those jobs far outpaces the supply.

In the sciences (especially CS, less so in the life sciences) you can get a job working on very interesting problems at a great salary in the private sector. In the private sector very few people are paid to research critical theory.
