Also even leaving aside this important edge case, facebook’s content is visibly terrible and fake because of the real names issue, a policy which appears to be largely driven by ad targeting concerns, not good UX

re: stalking. fb was pushing a fellow student's location to me at events she was planning to attend. it felt very much like fb was encouraging stalking. i got fed up and deleted my fb account. besides the aspect of males stalking females i found it personally offensive.

I agree that every policy has corner cases it fails with, and the case you point out is one of them. That said, it does tend to be a driver of better incentives, i.e. if you write something with your own real name, you will be more authentic about it.

Facebook and Quora have 2.3b and 300M monthly active users. It's over simplistic to say that things aren't working for them and even more simplistic to attribute it to this particular product decision.
