The seminal books in science are not the book to be read now. Science advances – they might be very interesting historically. Take "Genetic algorithms in search, optimization, and machine learning" – enormously cited, but should we read it now?
I've often benefited from reading classics. I've only very quickly skimmed Goldberg, but I spent quite a few hours with John Holland's book (also on the list, and closely related), and it was time well spent. YMMV.
