I've met two of those people. It was far from casual, and not a distinction other people forgot. Like winning an Olympic gold medal, a Nobel Prize, or being a billionaire. (Perhaps moreso than some of those things.)

I had an oddly inverted sense of this growing up, since my next-door neighbor was a (very normal, very Midwestern) retired NASA astronaut. I didn't realize until later how much less likely this career path was than becoming a doctor, teacher, or lawyer.
