Dynamic optimism = another term for instrumental rationality? From Less Wrong: "Instrumental rationality is the art of choosing and implementing actions that steer the future toward outcomes ranked higher in one's preferences."
Very similar, although it's notable that much of the emphasis in the essay on dynamic optimism is on collective outcomes, not just individual.

Yes, instrumental rationality is about one's personal utility function -- but an important caveat any LWer would hasten to add is that you can have "collective outcomes" as a major term in your personal utility function.

I don't understand how "instrumental rationality" tries to distinguish itself from behavior. (Presumably were I to study it, that would help!)
