Interesting in part because there's many almost-Nobelists - people who reasonably could have been given a Prize, but didn't get it because of politics, bad luck, the rule that only 3 people can be given the Prize, etc.

Those people have very different lives as a result. Not necessarily worse (or better), but radically different.

Do you think it's the starkest change in status? I normally cite people going from being grad students to assistant professors at elite universities as my example of that.

Interesting question! It's a v different type of change in status. The Asst profs have the advantage that they still have lots of peers. Whereas the Nobelists s'times suffer the superhero (or sudden wealth or fame) problem - all of a sudden being placed above common humanity

Nobel prize is also very interesting to me because - Its founding story is like A Christmas Carol. He read pre-mature obituary of himself and then wanted to change his future - How it went from personally started award to internationally recognized award is super interesting

IMO, Nobel Prize is a celebration rather than competition. So I don’t think the winners feel happier than many others. It’s a bit like lottery in the sense that everything will calm down eventually and life will be tranquil again. There’re many other measures of success anyway

I think nobels are good overall but the high rate of scientific discovery coupled with the long backlog (in part due to the discipline bottleneck) make their attribution somewhat arbitrary. Many deserving scientists are just waiting for their turn.
