One thing I realized I’ve improved at recently is being able to tell the difference between actually understanding something & merely thinking that I’ve understood something. Among other things, I feel a sort of “click” with the former.

I also find myself subvocally explaining things to an inquisitive imaginary interlocutor who keeps asking me “why” type questions. When I can keep doing this then I’m satisfied I’ve understood something.

There's probably a reason that Oxford (and Cambridge?) have those intensive nearly-one-on-one tutorial sessions as part of their regular courses of study.
