Perhaps it is easier if you think of only two sites, the energy will be minimum when the group of four spin-1/2's **---** is not at spin-2 (here * is a spin-1/2).

This is accomplished if each connection between neighboring spin-1/2's *---* is a singlet, since the other two *'s in this group of four can only constitute a singlet or triplet.
