I've sometimes wondered about the scenario: you're working at a cafe, ask the person beside you to watch your laptop while you go to bathroom. Unbeknownst to you, they're actually a thief (maybe on a coffee break).

Does your gesture of trust in them make them (on average) more or less likely to steal your laptop? For at least some thieves I'll bet the answer is it makes them a lot less likely to steal it.

Yeah, seems similar to BFE - in both cases, asking a question changes their relationship to you.
