I like Scott Aaronson's reasoning on complex numbers in QM: it's a continuity assumption, where if you're applying an operation for one second then it also makes sense applying it for half a second. Back when I studied QM, I also found this xtrmely objectionable. Strangely, couldn't elicit an emotional response from anyone around me. Gives great comfort to see the heroes sharing this sentiment, even Schrondinger himself! Need a class on historical emotional physics studies.
