Fun fact: LOTR was translated to Hungarian by Árpád Göncz - it was Communism, he was an "enemy" to the regime, had to make ends meet. He then became the first democratic President of the Republic. So every Hungarian kid's first thought when opening the book is "huh WTF".

To me it was the Elves that were elevated to a different level thru the movies, esp Galadriel. I didn't feel them as so Ethereal and "Gothic" (in the Christian sense) while reading.
Interesting interpretation. Galadriel didn't quite work for me, nor Elrond. But I'm always conflicted about Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving - both are quite accomplished, but I never entirely enjoy them. (Which may be the right aesthetic for the elves.)
