Best movie trailers ever? A few of my faves: Interstellar teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WzHXI5HizQ … Cloud Atlas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWnAqFyaQ5s … Man of Steel teaser:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wArmHSPIvlQ …

Perhaps slightly unfashionable opinion: the first of the trilogy of movies was the best. But all three were very good!

I feel that way about the movies as well. I can't quite discern whether I'm just clinging to the books (I felt FotR kept closest) or if it has more to do with enjoying the mystery and stage-setting more than the epic climaxes.

It brings alive something you strongly _feel_ through all the books, but rarely directly see.

This scene in the book does capture some of it, though: beneath the bonhomie and kindliness, Gandalf has a core of steel:pic.twitter.com/km1ZclFQxV

Wut One of the reasons (to me) Tolkien is interesting+so good at what he does is precisely that he only gives glimpses in LOTR at the depth he develops in the Silmarillion+elsewhere. . . The movies were acceptable (a compliment). Battle scene at Helm's deep was awesome, though

One of my favourite examples of this is Tolkien's brief use of the phrase "the cats of Queen Beruthiel" in Moria: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Ber%C3%BAthiel … His essay on the phenomenon of subcreation has had a large influence on my life:https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/673176819965759489 …

I agree. LOTR may be one of the rare few movie franchises that exceeded expectations compared to the books ...and Anna yes rare sense of anticipation, as reinforced by trailers -- though built-in scarcity helped (3 movies vs. overexposure of new SW franchise for instance)
