Agreed. Perhaps a better framing for my original is "scalable contract" (rather than "financial instrument"), or something like that. Though copyleft itself seems to have stalled.

It's true BSD and other alternatives are doing well, but GPL still made a huge difference in the '90s/'00s and I think it serves a major role in providing a permanently Free corpus which serves as a deterrent. And ofc in absolute terms, the amount of GPL only goes up.
