These can be consistent, if you believe basic human decency sometimes means performing emotional labor.

I've said this elsewhere in the thread, but "basic human decency" was meant to convey the sentiment that it's not asking much of you to make small talk. (Whereas "emotional labor" = an acknowledgement that it IS asking a lot of you to make small talk)

Looking through the other replies, I agree with the power imbalance (especially threatened loss of driving privileges for low average star ratings) and frequency comments. It is asking more of the drivers, on average, though not in every case.
