I've said this elsewhere in the thread, but "basic human decency" was meant to convey the sentiment that it's not asking much of you to make small talk. (Whereas "emotional labor" = an acknowledgement that it IS asking a lot of you to make small talk)
These can be consistent, if you believe basic human decency sometimes means performing emotional labor.

Of course, even if you do believe that, if someone says "I'm tired at the moment, hope you don't mind if I just sit in quiet and rest" then the driver should also respect that wish.
