I wonder if Popper had met a koala at that point? They're usually rather grumpy animals. Kangaroos have a much more pleasant nature, and are nicer to be around.

Koalas are also reclusive compared to Kangaroos, who are also far more numerous. You are much less likely to see a Koala in the wild. I'm guessing NZ didn't suffer an Australian possum invasion back then either.
