(One curiosity: until I started working on open science, I'd barely ever heard impact factor mentioned seriously in hiring. Though I had heard people talk a lot about the "quality" of journals. I wonder how field-dependent interest in impact factor is?)

It certainly is. The are no IFs for humanities journals; physics, maths and computer science are more focussed in preprints and conference papers. It's probably strongest in chemistry, life sciences and parts of social science.
