I've always been dubious that this helps much (if at all), but it's a common complaint among actual practitioners. However, the simplest known expression of mathematical ideas is often quite complex.
That said, I'm sure there _are_ complex artists' statements which are necessarily complex. A fun exercise is to try rewriting statements in ways that entirely preserve (or actually enhance) meaning, while simplifying the language. This is often very revealing.
I would actually argue that your second to last sentence isn’t just a fun exercise - it is the best definition of art.
And yes, I do agree that plenty of artists/intellectuals/people in general present things in deceptive (obscurant/pretentious) ways, which, following the definition in my previous tweet, detracts from/disqualifies the communication as art.
