That has always been a mystery to me. Who started it? Who benefits?
I presume it's in part charlatanism, and in part imposter syndrome, on the part of some artists. But that may influence social norms so that even first-rate artists feel pressure to give a pretentious statement.
Always a pity to see some artwork that is simply awesome accompanied by a lame artist's statement. You wish they'd just remain silent. But that's not the social game. It's a pity.
I think it's often required when applying to exhibitions, residencies, etc. Basically like asking theorists to "explain" their new paper by producing a small artwork.
