That has always been a mystery to me. Who started it? Who benefits?
I presume it's in part charlatanism, and in part imposter syndrome, on the part of some artists. But that may influence social norms so that even first-rate artists feel pressure to give a pretentious statement.
I’ve heard people who don’t understand mathematics well claim that mathematicians use a bunch of fancy language to ‘veil’ their ideas, which could be stated more simply. Sure this complaint isn’t same thing?
Yes. I've talked extensively to artists about it - many have the exact same complaint, but say it's necessary. There is a (much weaker) version in mathematical areas: ppl will sometimes make things more obscure than is necessary to increase chance of acceptance.
Couldn’t find the exact quote, but Tarantino said something in the vein of « when people ask me to talk more about my movies and their meaning, I tell them there’s nothing more to be said. Just watch the movie, it’s all there is to say. »
There is a great Kurosawa quote when he was asked to summarize a movie : if I could I would write it on a poster and wouldn’t make the movie
Yes, here’s a great example:https://twitter.com/dangolding/status/1015146614648815617 …
I have just stopped reading them. I enjoy the art better without the descriptions.
