Academics:
How do you handle the situation in which someone who made an extremely minor contribution to a project think they deserve to be listed as a co-author (rather than simply being thanked in the acknowledgements)?

Depends on how much damage it'll do to other people, especially junior authors who contributed a lot. If not much, then communicate to the person "okay, but we'll avoid working with you again". If a lot, then push back hard.

(Also depends on how good faith you think they're being. If it's clear they're not, then it's worth standing up against even minor infractions - and being sure to minimize your involvement with them in future.)
